Description
The African crowned crane, also known as the gray crowned crane, is a bird in the crane family found in eastern and southern Africa. It inhabits the dry savannah in Sub-Saharan Africa, except during nesting season when it chooses wetter terrain. They can also be found in marshes, cultivated lands and grassy flatlands near rivers and lakes in Kenya and Uganda. Birds nearer the tropics are typically sedentary and do not migrate unless drier periods occur. Like other cranes these birds display dancing, bowing, and jumping during breeding times. It has a booming call and makes a honking sound quite different from the trumpeting of other crane species. Both sexes dance. Immature birds join in the festivities. While dancing is a vital part of courtship, it may be done at any time of the year. “African Crowned Cranes,” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 6/3/2021.
