With a 9-foot wingspan, the American White Pelican is one of the largest birds in North America. Despite its great size, it is a spectacular flier often found flying in unison with flocks of birds. Forages by swimming on surface, dipping bill into water and scooping up fish in pouch. Most pelicans of this species are migratory, though some populations on Texas coast and in Mexico are permanent residents. Migrates by day, in flocks. Birds from northern plains migrate southeast and southwest to coastal lowlands. Some nonbreeding birds are all season residents, especially in Florida. “American White Pelicans,” is a hand-painted digital image and composite created by Spadecaller.
Spadecaller is an experienced traditional artist, who creates original hand-painted digital images and photo composite artworks. In the late fifties at eight years old, Spadecaller started formal training in traditional oil painting.Through considerable personal sacrifice, his mother nurtured his artistic talents and provided him with the tools to launch his creative journey. Spadecaller attended The School of Visual Arts in New York City (1970-71), and during the 70's up until the late 80's, he exhibited acrylic and oils in Montreal and New York.
