Description
Other than the local wildlife, seabirds and some gopher tortoises, Caladesi Island has had few inhabitants during its 4000-year existence. To see Florida before all the high-rises, condos, restaurant and shops covered the coastline, Caladesi Island remains a great sanctuary of natural beauty. An Indian burial mound indicates their use of the island prior to 1500, when it was known as Hog Island. In 1921, a hurricane split the island, forming Honeymoon and Caladesi Island. in 1968 the State of Florida purchased and preserved it as a state park. This is a hand-painted mixed media image created in Spadecaller’s Florida studio.
