In the wild, the Camellia japonica is found in mainland China, Taiwan, southern Korea and southern Japan. Camellia japonica has appeared in paintings and porcelain in Asian art since the 11th century. The tradition of drinking tea produced from camellia (camelia sinensis) originated 5000 years ago. In Japan, the sharing of tea is a living art. Murata Jukō is known as an early developer of the Japanese tea ceremony, also called the Way of Tea. He studied Zen under the monk Ikkyū, who revitalized Zen in the 15th century, and this is considered to have influenced his concept of chanoyu (the tea ceremony). By the 16th century, tea drinking had spread to all levels of society in Japan. The Japanese tea ceremony is an interlude in which one leads oneself for the moment to the spirit of beauty, quietude, and politeness toward others. “Camellia japonica,” is a hand-painted digital image created by Spadecaller.
Spadecaller is an experienced traditional artist, who creates original hand-painted digital images and photo composite artworks. In the late fifties at eight years old, Spadecaller started formal training in traditional oil painting.Through considerable personal sacrifice, his mother nurtured his artistic talents and provided him with the tools to launch his creative journey. Spadecaller attended The School of Visual Arts in New York City (1970-71), and during the 70's up until the late 80's, he exhibited acrylic and oils in Montreal and New York.
