Description
In addition to the beauty of cattails growing on the edges of lakes and marshes, most people do not know that it can be a very valuable addition to diet, as it also affords a wealth of unique nutrients and medicinal assets, many of which have been relied on for hundreds of years.
With the scientific name Typha, this unassuming species of flowering plants is also known by many names, including bulrush, reedmace, raupo, or corn dog grass. but almost every species share similar properties.
For thousands of years in Europe, these plants have been eaten and were extremely valuable. During the pioneer days of America, the medicinal applications of the plant saved thousands of lives. Cattails provide relief from inflammation, heat boils, and sores, as well as a preventative agent for anemia and cancer. Although most people aren’t even aware that this plant can be eaten, the rhizomes of the cattail can be consumed, as well as the leaf bases and the sheath.
As a subject for this digital minimalist painting, cattails make a fine aesthetic subject for artists and photographers.
