I was about seven years old, when I first saw a wisteria tree. I remember the day, because it was the first time that I met my neighbor, Miss Cogan. She was a retired school teacher. There were foolish rumors about her – that she was a witch. She startled me, while I was looking at her beautiful backyard. Standing still with her long white hair, white shawl, and crooked cane made her first appear like a stone statue. It was on that day that I saw this amazing tree. Its limbs stretched out over her rock pond with goldfish. We talked about the tree and her goldfish. Miss Cogan and I became friends. We would have tea and talk about cats, trees, and the plants in her garden. Since that day, Miss Cogan’s beautiful wisteria tree and goldfish pond remain forever etched in my memory.
