Artist's Description

This Spadecaller picture features two colorful subjects: the fruit pigeon and the wisteria tree.
Found only in Southeast Asia and surrounding areas, the colorful fruit dove, also known as fruit pigeons, are ecologically important as dispersers of seeds of many fruiting trees and shrubs, including palms, laurels and figs. A native of rain forests in New Guinea and the nearby Indonesian islands, this brilliantly colored bird is just one of 50 fruit dove species; many of which are currently threatened or extinct.

Artwork featuring these beautiful birds began centuries ago. Emperor Huizong (1082 – 1135) during the Song dynasty painted an outstanding work entitled, “Pigeon on Peach Branch.”
The wisteria vine or tree with its cascading jewel-like petals has also been a popular subject for centuries. During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period (before 975 B.C.), Xu Xi created several floral works that showcased Chinese wisteria.
