Description
Wood ducks are full time residents in the Southeast and along the Pacific coast of the United States. Concentrated along the Gulf Coast and the Atlantic coast south of New Jersey are the highest populations. Many wood ducks migrate north to cooler climates during the summer months. Wood ducks can be seen in every state east of the Rocky Mountains and throughout the Pacific Northwest in the summer months. They prefer areas that have a mix of water and forests habitats adjacent to ponds, lakes, marshes and along rivers and streams.
After the pair breed, they build their nests in the cavity of a tree; often a hole abandoned by a woodpecker. They prefer trees that hang over water or are close to a water source. With wetland loss and competition from other species, sometimes they will use nest boxes built by people.
Though their populations temporarily declined in the late 19th century, Wood ducks are currently not listed as threatened or endangered. Wood ducks still face threats in the wild, including wetland loss, habitat loss, and deforestation. “Drake Wood Duck and Iris,” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 5/4/2021.
