Description
The Easter lily (Lilium longiflorum) is native to both Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. Currently, nearly all Easter lily bulbs used in North America are grown on coastal bottom lands in northwestern California and southwestern Oregon. This traditional time-honored flower of Easter is highly regarded as a joyful symbol of beauty, hope and life.
In Christianity, Lilium longiflorum, commonly known as the Easter Lily, is a symbol of the resurrection of Christ, which is celebrated during Eastertide. Jesus referenced the fragrant white flower by saying, "Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these" (Luke 12:27). Jesus’ words assured His followers that they need not worry about their worldly needs. According to religious folklore, "after the resurrection of Jesus, these beautiful flowers were found growing in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed the night before His crucifixion and wherever a drops of Jesus' sweat fell, a lily grew.
