Description
After 22 months growing inside its mother's womb, a newborn baby elephant calf is born. At birth, the baby elephant weighs about 250 pounds and stands about three feet tall. Though calves are unable to see very well, they can recognize their mothers by touch, scent, and sound. For the first couple of months, calves stay close to their mothers. They drink up to 3 gallons of milk a day for about 2 years and began eating some plants at about four months. They keep drinking milk for up to ten years. There are two subspecies of the African elephant, the forest elephant, and the savanna elephant. The body size of the savanna elephant is larger. Elephants are the world's largest land animal! Male African elephants can reach 10 ft. tall and weigh up to 8 tons.
“Illegal killing of African elephants for ivory remains a significant threat to elephant populations. At the same time, the human population of Africa has grown tenfold, from 125 million to 1,225 million, creating competition for land with elephants. The future for the African elephant remains uncertain. “Elephant Calf Portrait,” is a hand-painted digital painting and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida studio.
