Description
The Florida grasshopper sparrow has been on the verge of extinction with only a recorded population of about 100 birds. The endangered subspecies of grasshopper sparrow is native to the dry prairies of south-central Florida. The sparrow is so highly endangered because of its exclusive dependence upon Florida dry prairie habitat, 85% of which has been destroyed by replacing the prairie with pastures for cattle. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, The US Fish & Wildlife Service, FWC, Audubon and others are funding several captive breeding efforts to save the species. The breeding program has been expanded to several facilities and establishing the sparrows in new habitats is proceeding. Encouraging reports of at least two other subpopulations of Florida Grasshopper Sparrows on private lands offer hope for the future of this rare Florida bird. “Endangered Florida Sparrow,” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 5/20/2021.
