Description
The golden conure, also known as the golden parakeet, was listed as endangered in 1975. Fewer than 5000 birds currently inhabit the rainforests in Northwest Brazil, south of the Amazon River. Loss of habitat and destruction of nests to obtain young for the pet trade are the main threats to its survival. Long-term captive breeding is vital to the survival of this species. Due to the bird's sweet nature, it is a popular parrot among bird fanciers. Captive bred birds are not suited for release into the wild. Hopefully every effort possible to keep these birds in their natural habitat will continue. They are playful, family-oriented birds and will often care for young from other birds. They feed on a wide range of fruits, berries, seeds, flowers, nuts and maize. “Golden Parakeet in Papaya Tree,” is a digital painting and composite created by Spadecaller.
