Description
The largest heron species, the Great White Heron, is found only in south Florida and the Florida Keys. Formerly thought to be just a white color morph of the great blue heron, recent research indicates that it is at least a subspecies. New preliminary data suggests that it may even be a completely separate species. Nesting habitat is mainly on mangrove islands within Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge and Key West National Wildlife Refuge. It is easy to confuse the Great White Egrets with the Great White Heron. The Great Egret is a little smaller than the Great White Heron, however the best indicator is the color of the legs. Great egrets have dark black legs while the Great White Heron have lighter or yellow legs. "Heron Takes Flight,” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite create in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 1/5/2021.
