Description
House Finches are native to the southwestern United States and Mexico, however, through natural and artificial range expansion, they are now abundant from coast to coast.
They were introduced in the eastern United States when illegal caged birds were released in New York in 1940. Throughout their range these birds are primarily permanent residents, although some northern and eastern birds migrate south. In the western U.S., House Finches maintain their native habitats of deserts, grassland, chaparral, and open woods. Their diet consists mainly of seeds, buds, and berries. The pair of finches presented in this picture are perched in a Grapeholly shrub, which is native to western North America. “House Finches and Grapeholly,” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 01/01/2021.
