Artist's Description

The Malva flower blooms in late summer and into fall. Malva is the ancient Latin name for "mallow," used by Pliny and derived from the Greek name Malachi, "to soften," in reference to its emollient qualities. The common mallow is part of the large family of Malvaceae plants that include cotton, okra and hibiscus. It is an edible plant that has been used for medicinal care as well as food. The fruits are round and have cheese-like wedges which give the common mallow its nickname, cheese plant. Rich in nectar and pollen, these flowers readily attract bees and hummingbirds. The hummingbird featured in this image is a rare albino ruby-throated hummingbird. Hummingbird and Malva Wildflower is a digital painting and composite.
