Humpback Whales feed mostly on sand eels; this food source ultimately leads to an interesting relationship with marine birds like the arctic terns. Humpback Whales will consume up to 1 ton of sand eels every day. Using their blowholes, they send massive bubbles of air up to the surface of the water, forcing the sand eels upward. The whales will then rise and swallow mouthfuls of the corralled sand eels, as schools of small fish come to share in the ocean feast. At the surface, sharp eyed marine birds swoop down and pluck the small fish from the churning waters. “Humpback Whales and Terns,” is a hand-painted digital image created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 3/21/2021.
