Description
Spadecaller is not alone in his admiration of the hydrangea flower; for centuries Chinese and Japanese literature and visual art demonstrate this fact. In Japanese hydrangeas are called “ajisai.” References to ajisai first appeared in the 8th century in the Man’yoshū, an anthology of poetry. Chinese paintings of wild hydrangea originated during the Song dynasty (960-1279). In the 14th century, beautiful Ming Chinese silk tapestries made with real gold thread are on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the 17th century during the reign of Yongzhen exquisite Chinese porcelain pieces were produced. Most of the Hydrangea species now in cultivation throughout the world are of Asian origin. This is a hand-painted digital image created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 7/18/2020.
