Description
Every time I view 17th-century Dutch landscape paintings, I ask myself one question: What is it about the cow that these artists loved? Was it the pride in the Dutch milk industry that was reflected in the landscape paintings of that genre? The cow had become a symbol of Holland and its prosperity and any picture portraying cows not only reflected the 17th-century social and economic conditions, but also expressed patriotic feelings.
Exports of cheese with pictures of dairy cows became well known. Dutch painters of that time were inspired by the Italian landscapes of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. Many of them travelled to Italy and after they had come back, they tried to recreate the unique quality of Italian light. However, despite the Italian theme, Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem still included cows in his paintings, which coupled with the pastoral calm of nature, conveyed in fact a message about the stable prosperity of Holland.
But beyond the special proclivities of the Dutch artists, the cow has remained an intriguing subject for artists and art enthusiasts worldwide. The image of the cow imparts tranquility, sustenance, affection, and peace. Cows are gentle creatures who are affectionate, emotional, and intelligent. Mahatma Gandhi described a cow as “a poem of compassion.” Cows are certainly deserving of human compassion as well as our understanding and respect. “Lone Calf,” is a hand-painted digital painting and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 8/31/2020.
