Artist's Description

The most abundant wild duck species in North America is the Mallard. Its hardiness in cold climates, its varied food tastes, and its tolerance of human activity account for its success in the wild and its adaptability to varied habitats. The Mallard can be found wintering as far north as conditions permit, as long as there is open water and access to food. Ducks have a thick layer of body fat and soft down under their waterproof feathers, which enables them to be extremely cold hardy. Mallards can be found in almost any wetland habitats, including permanent wetlands such as marshes, bogs, riverine floodplains, beaver ponds, and lakes. To conserve energy, ducks spend most of their time during winter actively searching for food and resting. And for Mallards, courtship and pair-bonding also occur in the winter. “Mallards in the Winter,” is a mixed media and hand-painted digital image. This picture was created in Spadecaller's Florida studio on 12/16/2019.
