The harrowing flight of the “renegade” Nez Perce began on June 15, 1877. Chief Joseph, Looking Glass, White Bird, Ollokot, Poker Joe and Toohoolhoolzote lead 2,900 men, women and children hoping to find a peaceful sanctuary. After their Crow allies refused them shelter, they tried to reach Lakota Chief Sitting Bull in Canada.
