Description
The large, pearl-colored, nocturnal flowers of the night blooming cereus ( also known as Peruvian apple cactus) remain open for only one night. When the first rays of the morning sun touch the blossoms, they quickly wilt and fall to the ground. The fruit of the Peruvian Apple cactus is strikingly similar looking to Dragon Fruit. The crunchy and juicy fruit has a subtle tartness and a flowery sweetness like sugarcane. They are best enjoyed raw and may simply be eaten out of hand or prepared in salads, desserts, and smoothies. The scent of this flowering cactus is irresistible to bees and birds. The Peruvian Apple cactus is currently becoming an important cash crop in Israel where water shortages challenge the farming industry. Groves of these cacti are now replacing old orchards that once required large amounts of water. “The Peruvian Apple Cactus” is a mixed media digital painting.
