Porterweed is in the genus Stachytarpheta, which is comprised of 65 species. These annual herbs or low, perennial shrubs mostly of the New World tropics are found in southeast Asia and on Pacific Islands. They are members of the Verbena family and are highly regarded as butterfly attractors. In the tropical Americas, they attract hummingbirds as well. For this reason, many porterweed species have found their way into cultivation in tropical and warm temperate regions of the world.
They are popular throughout the Caribbean, and in Florida. This image showcases the violetear hummingbird, which is found in Mexico, and Central and northern South America. In addition to various medicinal properties, the porterweed species found in the Bahamas is used to brew a frothy type beer, which is used to reduce fever, alleviate skin irritations, constipation, and kill worms in children.
