Hibiscus is a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae. Red Darling Hibiscus is a popular cultivar of the genus, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. There are several hundred species in this large genus that are native to warm temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. Both annual and perennial herbaceous hibiscus plants are represented, as well as woody shrubs and small trees.
The hibiscus is a national symbol of Haiti and the national flower of nations including the Solomon Islands and Niue. The red hibiscus is the flower of the Hindu goddess Kali and appears frequently in depictions of her in the art of Bengal, India. “Red Darling Hibiscus” is a Spadecaller digital painting andcomposite created from original photos.
Spadecaller is an experienced traditional artist, who creates original hand-painted digital images and photo composite artworks. In the late fifties at eight years old, Spadecaller started formal training in traditional oil painting.Through considerable personal sacrifice, his mother nurtured his artistic talents and provided him with the tools to launch his creative journey. Spadecaller attended The School of Visual Arts in New York City (1970-71), and during the 70's up until the late 80's, he exhibited acrylic and oils in Montreal and New York.
