Description
Seabirds and humans share a long history: they have provided food to hunters, guided fishermen to bountiful fishing grounds and led sailors home and to undiscovered lands. Seabirds have always captivated the human imagination: for their mastery of wind and ocean, their aerial beauty and the unmatched wildness of the coasts and islands, where they return to breed. However, a global tragedy is occurring. The number of seabirds on our planet is in free fall. In the last sixty years seabird populations have dropped by nearly 70%, a billion fewer now than there were in 1950. Scientists have begun to understand their epic voyages, their astounding abilities to navigate for tens of thousands of miles on undistinguished seas, and their uncanny ability to smell their way towards fish and home. Only the poets and artists in the past regarded the seabirds as creatures riding the surges and currents of the entire planet, but modern scientists have become acutely aware of the importance of their survival. It is linked to our own survival. “Rendezvous at Sea,” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida studio.
