Description
Azaleas and rhododendrons are members of the genus Rhododendron, which is one of the largest genera in the plant world. There are over 900 species and over 20,000 named hybrids. The rhododendron is a shrub that ranges from small ground-hugging specimens to large tree-like varieties. It is native to Asia and throughout the highlands of the Appalachian Mountains of North America. Producing spicy, sweet, and intoxicating blooms, Rhododendrons attract hummingbirds and bees. The ruby throated hummingbird is by far the most common hummingbird seen east of the Mississippi River in North America and a frequent patron of the rhododendron blossom. “Rhododendron and Hummingbird,” is a digital painting and composite created by Spadecaller.
