Considered a species of special concern in Florida, this majestic and unusual bird will usually avoid areas heavily populated by humans. Habitat destruction and degradation, along with declining food sources are the major threats to their continued survival. Other threats include pesticides, pollution and illegal hunting. Roseate spoonbills are listed as a “State Species of Special Concern” and are protected under the U.S. Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This Spadecaller image is a digital painting and composite that includes modified elements derived from "Morning in the Tropics," (1855) by Frederic Edwin Church.
