Cotton in the Southern states of America is harvested every year in the fall and winter. When the bolls crack open exposing the fluffy white fiber, the crop is ready for harvest. Unlike the past, picking, planting, and baling cotton is fully mechanized.
Nonetheless, the legacy of slavery on the cotton plantations encumber a nation still suffering from its sordid past. Cotton sown and harvested by the hands of black slaves powered the textile revolution in the United States. In fact, the chief cause of the Civil War stemmed from the fear of losing black slave labor. “Song of the Wren,” is a digital painting and photo composite created in Spadecaller's Florida Studio.
Spadecaller is an experienced traditional artist, who creates original hand-painted digital images and photo composite artworks. In the late fifties at eight years old, Spadecaller started formal training in traditional oil painting.Through considerable personal sacrifice, his mother nurtured his artistic talents and provided him with the tools to launch his creative journey. Spadecaller attended The School of Visual Arts in New York City (1970-71), and during the 70's up until the late 80's, he exhibited acrylic and oils in Montreal and New York.
