As members of the salmon family, trout also grow relatively large. The largest rainbow trout on record weighed 48 pounds. Rainbow trout are predators, and will eat almost anything that they can catch, including insects, small fish, and crustaceans. Their predators include other fish, kingfishers, herons, eagles, raccoons, and of course, humans. A distinct characteristic of the rainbow trout is an innate desire to return to spawn in the same stream where they were hatched. During spawning season in the spring, rainbows will find a secluded cove or inlet, where they will dig a nest in the gravel and lay their eggs.
