Artist's Description

The red drum also known as redfish, channel bass, puppy drum, spottail bass, or simply red, is a game fish found in the Atlantic Ocean from Massachusetts to Florida and in the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to northern Mexico.
In the early 1980s, Cajun-style blackened redfish became a favorite item in the seafood cuisine. On the television program Iron Chef America, redfish was the "secret ingredient" (March 1, 2009). Redfish seasonings and recipes spurred commercial over fishing to the point that extinction of the species was imminent.

Since 1980, new limits for both sport and commercial fishermen have increased populations. To help maintain sustainable red drum populations the states imposed various recreational catch limits. But inconsistent limits were not a reliable safeguard. By executive order on October 20, 2007, U.S. President George W. Bush designated the red drum as a protected game fish.
