The spotted seatrout is an estuarine fish found in the southern United States along the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean coasts from Maryland to Florida. They are most abundant in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida. I have brought home my fair share of these beauties for dinner after a great day in the sunny Gulf waters of Florida. While most of these fish are caught on shallow, grassy flats, spotted seatrout reside in virtually any inshore area. Though spotted seatrout are caught by both commercial and recreational fishermen, recreational fishing represents most of the catch. Fortunately, most states have banned using gillnets. Seatrout are in the top ten species for recreational fishing in the United States.
