The passing of Leonard Cohen on November 7, 2016 deeply touched many people around the world, as it did the artist of this portrait. The poet, novelist, musician, painter, and a late-starting singer-songwriter from Montreal left an indelible mark on the past half a century. In 2013 Spadecaller created several music videos sharing his visual art with Cohen’s musical genius, i.e.: Democracy, Who by Fire, and Dance Me to the End of Time – to name a few. With the current upheaval of a world struggling to survive disease, violent racism, and the rise of totalitarian governments, Cohen’s music and poetry is especially poignant. This is Spadecaller's, “The Timeless Leonard Cohen.”
Spadecaller is an experienced traditional artist, who creates original hand-painted digital images and photo composite artworks. In the late fifties at eight years old, Spadecaller started formal training in traditional oil painting.Through considerable personal sacrifice, his mother nurtured his artistic talents and provided him with the tools to launch his creative journey. Spadecaller attended The School of Visual Arts in New York City (1970-71), and during the 70's up until the late 80's, he exhibited acrylic and oils in Montreal and New York.
