Description
Also known throughout the United States as the glutton, woods devil, Indian devil, and ommeethatsees (a Cree Indian word), carcajou, quickhatch, nasty cat, and skunk bear, the wolverine is a powerful carnivore. It can weigh up to 40 pounds. The wolverine is the largest land-living species in the weasel family, (mustelids). These tough predators are solitary and require a lot of terrain to hunt. Wolverines inhabit remote boreal forests, taiga, and tundra in the northern latitudes of Europe, Asia, and North America.
Wolverines in the lower 48 states are under consideration for protection under the Endangered Species Act. Once heavily persecuted and likely eliminated from the lower 48 states, the wolverine returned on its own over the past 50 years. However, the primary reason now for a threatened listing is climate change. Wolverines need deep snow to birth and rear their young. As snowpack continues melting earlier each year, aggressive action must be taken to reduce the carbon pollution driving climate change, and to consider climate impacts in wolverine conservation efforts.
“The Wolverine,” is a Spadecaller digital painting and composite.
