About this Portrait:
Adam Schiff Adam (born June 22, 1960) is a U.S. Representative from California, chairman of the U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and a member of the Democratic Party. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, selected Rep.Schiff to head up the impeachment team. On Jan. 24th, 2020 Rep. Schiff concluded his commentary in the senate impeachment hearings with an impassioned appeal urging senators they must convict and remove President Trump because "you know you can't trust this president to do what's right for this country."
On Friday, he cited a news report that Republican senators had been warned that their heads would be “on a pike” if they voted against Mr. Trump. The Daily Beast declared that Schiff's remarks “will go down in history.” Ryan Knight, a progressive activist, called it “a closing statement for the ages.” Video of the speech quickly went viral.
The background of this Spadecaller image includes the Trump International Hotel. Established in 1892, The Old Post Office, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Old Post Office and Clock Tower, located at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., was completed in 1899. In 2013, the property was leased for 60 years to a holding company that U.S. President Donald Trump owns. Trump developed the property into a luxury hotel, the Trump International Hotel Washington, D.C., which opened in September 2016. Room rates range from $650 to $15,000 per night.
Lobbyists representing the Saudi government reserved blocks of rooms at President Trump’s Washington, D.C., hotel days after Trump’s election in 2016 — paying for an estimated 500 nights at the luxury hotel.
At the time, these lobbyists were reserving large numbers of hotel rooms as part of an unorthodox campaign that offered U.S. military veterans a free trip to Washington. They sent them to Capitol Hill to lobby against a law the Saudis opposed. In December 2016, the Saudi lobbyists spent more than $270,000 in a three month period to house six groups of visiting veterans at the Trump hotel.
Representatives of at least 22 foreign governments appear to have spent money at Trump Organization properties since its opening. There are two lawsuits accusing Trump of accepting illegal foreign payments, which is allegedly considered a violation of constitutional law.
