This recessive gene only shows up if the bird inherits the gene from both parents. In addition to the infrequency of both parents carrying the recessive gene, the survival rate of migrating white hummingbirds is very low. It is theorized that the white feathers are much too visible to predators and tend to be brittle, which hinders the strenuous challenge of migration. Consequently, the chances of albino hummingbirds mating are extremely small.
