Description
The rainforest is the most favored habitat of the Wompoo Fruit-Dove; they are rarely seen in other areas. The birds tend to remain in localized areas in search of fruit-bearing trees. The Chinaberry tree featured in this image is among the many native fruit bearing rainforest trees of mainland south-eastern Australia. These deciduous trees are also native to India, China, Pakistan, and some other parts of Asia. Australia has three distinct Wompoo Fruit-Dove populations along the east coast. This species also occurs in New Guinea. Despite their brilliant coloration, Wompoo Fruit-Doves are difficult to observe as they inconspicuously forage on fruit among the leaves high in the canopy of the rainforest. The sound of fruit falling onto the forest floor is often the best way to know they are present. “Wompoo Fruit Dove” is a hand-painted mixed media digital image and composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida studio.
