Description
The large, cream-colored, nocturnal flowers of the Peruvian Apple Cactus remain open for only one night and are of vital importance to pollinating bats and insects. The fruits, known locally as pitaya or Peruvian apple, vary in color from violet-red to yellow. The edible flesh is white and sweetens as the fruit ripens. This cactus grows in arid regions producing fruit during the dry season, which provides an essential source of food for the Gila Woodpeckers and other birds in its native range. Gila Woodpeckers thrive in desert habitats of the southwestern U.S. and Mexico, where they dig out nest holes in living Saguaro cacti. During the night, the blossoms of the Peruvian Apple Cactus open. By morning, the bees and birds arrive to feast on the nectar-laden flowers. When the sun rises, the blossoms shrink and fall off. “Woodpeckers and Cactus Flowers,” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 1/11/2021.
