Artist's Description
Yellowfin tuna is the top tropical tuna harvested by U.S. fishermen in the Atlantic. More than half of this catch comes from longline fisheries, which operate in the northwest Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean. Over-harvesting presents a clear threat to sustaining the species on a long term basis. Inadequate monitoring of longline commercial fishing throughout the world poses a serious threat to many species. Longlines frequently snare sea turtles and marine mammals. In recent years safety devices have been developed to reduce the unintentional hooking of sea turtles, sharks, and dolphins. However, research shows that many longliners continue to ignore these conservation standards. Hopefully, conservation advocates and educated consumers can continue to pressure the big tuna corporations to establish enforceable standards globally.
