Artist's Description
The Bluefin Trevally is a predatory fish with a diet dominated by fish and supplemented by cephalopods and crustaceans as an adult. Juveniles feed mostly on small crustaceans, but turn to a fish based diet as they mature. The species utilized various hunting techniques ranging from aggressive midwater attacks, reef ambushes, and snapping up prey items missed by the larger predators they often follow. The species grows to a maximum length of 117 cm (3.8 feet) weighing in at 43.5 kg (95 lbs.). Both commercial and recreational fishermen regard the bluefin trevally as a popular target. Due to overfishing the Hawaiian population has delinced rapidly in recent years, which has led to increased research in the aquaculture potential of the species, with spawning achieved in captivity.
