Description
The grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus), also known as the Congo grey parrot, Congo African grey parrot or African grey parrot, is native to equatorial Africa, including Angola, Cameroon, the Congo, Gabon, Ivory Coast Ghana, Kenya and Uganda. The species prefers dense forests but also inhabits forest edges and savanna forests. Environmentalists have warned that endangered parrots are being driven towards extinction. In the Congo alone, an estimated 15,000 are taken every year for the pet trade. To supply the global illegal wildlife trade, up to 21% of the wild population of African grey parrots is poached every year. Because of the grey parrots’ exceptional ability to mimic human speech, it is one of the most popular avian pets kept in captivity. Grey parrots are highly intelligent and are considered by many to be one of the most intelligent parrot species. (Oct. 4, 2016) The United Nations has effectively banned trade of the African grey parrot by placing it on a priority list of endangered species under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Ultimately, it is up to local governments to keep boots on the ground in protected areas by carrying out patrols, which and are involved in law enforcement, wildlife monitoring, community engagement and conservation management activities. Hopefully more will be done to protect these wonderful parrots from extinction. “Congo African Grey Parrots,” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio.
