Description
A compact, well-camouflaged bird, very shy bird of grassy areas, including natural meadows and agricultural fields, where it remains hidden from view on the ground unless flushed at close range. Flushed birds fly with noisy, whistling wings. The earliest records of domesticated Japanese quail populations are from 12th century Japan; however, there is evidence that the species was domesticated as early as the 11th century. These birds were originally raised as songbirds, and it is thought that they were extensively used in song contests. The Japanese Quail was introduced to Hawaii, and is found on all of the main islands. “Four Japanese Quail,” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 12/8/2020.
