Artist's Description

The Chinese have always adored this gentle giant known as the giant panda, regarding them as a symbol of peace. Consequently, they are offered as special gifts to royalty and a gesture of goodwill to foreign nations. Considered symbols of might and bravery, warriors were often compared to the pandas. Chinese emperors kept them to ward off evil spirits and natural disasters. Today, they are an endangered species and concerted efforts to protect the panda from extinction remain a high priority.
