Description
"Never again" is a slogan that is associated with the Holocaust and other genocides. In the context of genocide, the slogan was used by liberated prisoners at Buchenwald concentration camp to express anti-fascist sentiment. The phrase, “Never again shall Masada fall!” came from an epic poem written by Yitzhak Lamdan in 1927. The poem is about the siege of Masada, when a group of Jewish rebels committed suicide rather than be captured. Liberated survivors at Buchenwald concentration camp in 1945 were the first to invoke the phrase "never again" as part of their fight against fascism, and to "never forget" their murdered relatives and destroyed communities.
During the insurgency of the United States Capitol building on January 6th, 2021, there were terrorists wearing shirts that read, “Six Million Was Not Enough.” During the Trump administration, the resurrection of violent neo-Nazi hate groups has escalated. Promising to cleanse the world of Jews, and people of color, they have attacked synagogues and churches to kill blacks and Jews.
To assume that this can never happen again, is not wise. To avert another holocaust, we must always remember the survivors and victims. On the barbed wire is a piece of torn cloth that we have left behind us. Will we keep that promise: never again?
