Description
The Barred Owl is what is more commonly referred to as the "Hoot Owl" in the southeastern United States. Its deep hoots are common sounds in the thick forests of the region. Though primarily nocturnal, they sometimes hunt during daylight hours.
Despite its loud and ominous hoots, this attractive owl, can pass completely undetected as it flies noiselessly through the dense canopy or snoozes on a tree limb. Originally a bird of the east, during the twentieth century it spread through the Pacific Northwest and southward into California. Fossils dug up int Florida Tennessee, and Ontario reveal that the barred owl dates to at least 11,000 years ago. “Perching Hoot Owl” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 1/3/2022.
