Artist's Description
The International Crane Foundation (ICF) states that cranes "are ambassadors for peace among diverse peoples, who unite in efforts to save the elegant birds, and for the preservation of their fragile wetland and grassland homes and migratory staging grounds." Covering five continents, there are fifteen species of cranes ranging freely and migrating across deserts, mountains, frozen tundra, and the borders of hundreds of nations.
The red-crowned crane is the second-rarest crane in the world—second only to the whooping crane. It is an endangered species due to loss of habitat – a consequence of climate change and mining. Existing wetlands do not provide enough territory to sustain their survival. The beauty and presence of these marvelous creatures enriches our world.
