Description
In March 2020, no one expected that when the structure of society finally collapsed, traditional family households would emerge. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, estranged families came together to cook meals from scratch, to sew face masks, and to learn about teaching their homebound children. Essential workers faced danger hoping every day to come home safely to their families.
There were no more PTA meetings or basketball games. Day care centers closed as the schools and other businesses closed. Caring for children rested completely on the family at home. Meals had to be prepared. Everyone was home. Chores were shared. Shopping for food without contracting the virus became a routine challenge.
The strain of adjusting to a new world was frightening. With the onset of warm weather and open windows, one could hear parents and children yelling at each other. The pains of learning to relate to others had its breakdowns and its victories. Many extra-marital relationships dissolved. Domestic violence and child abuse hotlines buzzed with calls. While the pandemic crisis devastated some families, others found shelter and solace at home.
As many big corporations prospered amid the pandemic catastrophe, economic injustice became extremely apparent. Surrounded by death and grief, a new respect among essential workers, the unemployed, and the impoverished emerged. Regardless of the efforts of a few oligarchs and the political aristocracy seeking to control the nation through racism and greed, most citizens huddled together to save lives. The need for integral change became apparent. Even with all the casualties and financial loss, many families discovered its greatest value: the need to take responsibility, care, and love for one another. "The Post-Pandemic Family," is a digital abstract painting created in Spadecaller's Florida studio.
