Description
This Trumpeter Swan is stretching its wings before the wild lupine flowers at Lake Superior. Standing up to 4-feet tall with up to an 8-foot wingspan, trumpeter swans are the largest waterfowl in North America. In the 1800’s, early settlers hunted these birds nearly to extinction — using them for powder puffs and feathered hats. In the mid-1950s, Bernard Hamm became known as the Swan Guardian of Alberta Peace River. He worked to save trumpeter swans that settled and bred in the Grande Prairie region of Alberta. Protected by state and federal law, these great birds are thriving despite recent global climate changes. This is a hand-painted digital image and photo-composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 6/24/2022.
