Description
Ukrainians have a special relationship with the white stork. It is the national bird of Ukraine, and it is seen as a symbol of family, loyalty, and patriotism.Throughout most of Ukraine, stork nests are commonly found near people’s houses except in the eastern regions and the Crimean Peninsula. However, the best chance to spot stork nests are in the countryside. The mating season lasts from April through August, with the first birds arriving in late March and the last ones leaving in early September. As nights get colder by the end of summer, these warm-loving birds prepare for the journey to their wintering grounds in Africa and South Asia. Flocks of storks first gather in the fields and then perform a farewell ritual by whirling in the sky before they finally depart.
Although these birds are not a threatened species, the future of the Ukrainian people remain dangerously uncertain. “White Storks of Ukraine” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 7/6/2022.
