Artist's Description
The red-crowned crane, also known as the Manchurian Crane, is among the rarest cranes in the world. In Japan, the crane or tsuru, is a national treasure. The population of red-crowned cranes in Japan is mostly nonmigratory. The migratory populations of the red-crowned crane breed in Siberia, northeastern China and occasionally in northeastern Mongolia. The crane is the symbol of longevity and auspiciousness in both Japan and China, because it was once thought to have a thousand-year life span. These great birds are monogamous, and consequently their images are used for wedding decor. In addition to their symbolism and intriguing behavior, the majestic and graceful beauty of these birds has inspired artists for over 2000 years. “Wintering Manchurian Cranes,” is a mixed media digital painting and composite created by Spadecaller.
