Artist's Description

With a 9-foot wingspan, the American White Pelican is one of the largest birds in North America. Despite its great size, it is a spectacular flier often found flying in unison with flocks of birds. Forages by swimming on surface, dipping bill into water and scooping up fish in pouch. Most pelicans of this species are migratory, though some populations on Texas coast and in Mexico are permanent residents. Migrates by day, in flocks. Birds from northern plains migrate southeast and southwest to coastal lowlands. Some nonbreeding birds are all season residents, especially in Florida. “American White Pelicans,” is a hand-painted digital image and composite created by Spadecaller.
