Description
Pterodactyl and pteranodon are the common names for two extinct winged reptiles species in the genus, pterosaurs. They were the first and largest animals that ever flew on earth. The Pterosaurs are not actually classified as dinosaurs due to their bone structure. Nonetheless, this technical distinction doesn’t seem to have hurt its reputation among dinosaur lovers. Both species are often depicted alongside dinosaurs.
Pterodactyls existed during the Jurassic period, while the pteranodon lived during the Cretaceous period. In 1876, the first Pteranodon fossil was discovered in North America. Fossil evidence of their existence has also been found in present-day Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Alabama.
Pteranodons were much larger than Pterodactyls, and they do not have teeth similar to Pterodactyl teeth. The wingspan of a mature pteranodon ranged up to 20 feet. An airborne monster built for speed, the pteranodon spent most of its time soaring over the open ocean in hunt for fish.
“Monster of the Ancient Skies” was completed in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 6/27/2023. The image is a digital composite that includes a modified digital reproduction of Andreas Achenbach’s seascape, ‘Clearing Up, Coast of Sicily.’
